Live At Mister Rogers is my third album as a leader.

The making of this album was motivated by my desire to get an honest picture of how I sounded when playing for people and not for microphones only. As it seems that people not only listen to music but watch music all the time on all platforms. I decided to produce a show to which I would invite my friends to and I would simply record and film. ( The whole live footage of the album is available on youtube.com/michaelvaleanu ).

So I rented a venue named Mister Rogers in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, hired a videographer to capture the show and a sound engineer to record the audio.

At that time I had been living out of a suitcase for nearly two years since I was touring all the time. In October of 2017 I finally settled back in Brooklyn and gave my self a few months to take it easy, get back into a slower pace and less nomadic life. After a few months of that, I got the itch to record some music again.

My old friend and bassist extraordinaire Or Bareket joined me once again for the ride. On drums I got very lucky to Jochen Rueckert who I was looking up to for many years and whose playing I always loved.

We did a quick short rehearsal with Or and Jochen and then came the night to record the album. We did two identical sets in order to have to takes for each song. That is why "On a Clear Day" and "Chi Chi" both have two versions on the album.

There are two compositions on the album, which were both written while I was doing an artist residency at the Virginia Cultural Center for the Arts in August 2016. Hence the title "Virginia" of the second track - a contemplative and meditative kind of tune.

The tune "Poles and Ribbons" was first written for solo guitar and then orchestrated for the trio. This tune is fully written out with no improvisation - a format I like to use when writing for my instrument in order to challenge myself. The tune depicts the lonely walks I used to take as a child in Paris.
